Listen to the ads and other marketing material put out by the manufacturers of these devices.
You’ll learn that they have been specially designed to offer you the ultimate gaming experience with optimizations in the internal hardware, the chassis design, and input methods.
However, are they really necessary?
Internal Specs:
The first thing to look at is the specs inside the phone. Unlike gaming PCs and computers used for more general uses, gaming phones are seldom much different from other high-end handsets.
For example, the ASUS ROG Phone 6 Pro packs in an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 CPU with a top clock speed of 3.2GHz, 18GB of memory, and an Adreno 730 graphics processor.
The Samsung Galaxy S23 boasts a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with a top clock speed of 3.36GHz, 8GB of memory, and an Adreno 740 GPU. This makes its CPU and GPU more powerful, though it lacks somewhat in the RAM department.
The memory increase won’t make a major difference for most games, and the S23 has better specs elsewhere.
Most mobile games will run on practically any smartphone from the last few years, making them nearly universal in their compatibility.
Chassis Design and Input Options:
So if there’s little to gain in performance, the only thing that might make you consider buying a gaming phone is its extra features.
These are designed to make gaming easier and more comfortable, at least if you read the ad copy.
In fairness, a USB port on the side makes it easier to play in landscape mode while your phone charges, while hotkeys can speed up the time it takes to perform certain tasks in fast-paced games.
However, are these features worth the extra $500-$1,000? Probably not, unless you spend much of your waking hours playing games on your phone.
