Apple Wants To Make Spotlight Into A Serious Web Search Engine

Recent reports from AppleInsider clears that Apple is planning to turn Spotlight search into serious web search engine. This means we can expect another competitor of Google and Bing.

Apple’s internal search team is  working with social search firm Topsy. Topsy was acquired by Apple in 2013 for over $200 million.

Apple`s intentions were not clear when company has acquired as Topsy knows as giant a analytics and social search and analytics. Now it seems that Apple’s intention was to use Topsy’s expertise in search and indexing.

With the release of OS X Yosemite, we saw new “Spotlight Suggestions” feature on Apple desktop devices. This feature gather information from the web into Spotlight search. It is also a driving force behind suggested search results of Safari.

Now we also know that Apple uses  its own web crawler, known as AppleBot. Applebot allows Apple to index web pages on the web  server.

AppleInsider reports said that Apple has its internal search team since 2013, the same time when company has acquired Topsy.

Google been default search engine on Apple devices from long time. It will be interesting to see the impact on Google search market when Apple will start using its own search engine.

Millions of Apple devices are in the market which will no longer have Google by default. But you can change search engine to Google if you like.
